Parkinson's Program

Parkinson’s Disease Exercise Programs at Jackson YMCA

Exercise plays a vital role in managing Parkinson’s disease (PD), helping to maintain balance, mobility, and daily activities. Research shows that regular physical activity can significantly improve PD symptoms. The Jackson YMCA offers two specialized programs—Rock Steady Boxing and Pedaling for Parkinson’s—designed to support individuals with Parkinson’s in their journey towards better health.


How to Participate:


• Have a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.

• Complete a signed form and medical release.

• Agree to periodic monitoring and progress assessments.

• Attend an orientation session with our Parkinson’s program staff.


Rock Steady Boxing:


This non-contact, boxing-style fitness program helps improve the quality of life, confidence, and physical abilities of those with Parkinson’s. The program encourages participants to push their limits, with exercises that enhance speed, strength, balance, and flexibility. Research suggests that intense exercise may slow the progression of PD symptoms.


Pedaling for Parkinson’s:


Studies show that pedaling a bicycle at a rapid pace (80-90 revolutions per minute) can reduce Parkinson’s symptoms by 35%. Each session includes a warm-up, a main exercise set, and a cool-down, all within pre-determined heart rate zones and closely monitored by program facilitators. While not a cure, pedaling has shown to provide significant benefits.
